Massage Gun Safety: Areas to Avoid
Bones, joints, and sensitive areas require special care. This guide covers what to avoid and how to use your device safely every time.
Massage guns are powerful tools, and like any tool, they can cause harm when misused. Knowing which areas to avoid is just as important as knowing the correct technique.
Never use a massage gun directly on bones, joints, or bony prominences. This includes the spine, knees, elbows, ankles, and the tops of feet. Percussive force on bone can cause bruising, nerve irritation, or stress fractures over time.
Avoid the neck — especially the front and sides where major blood vessels and nerves run close to the surface. The back of the neck can be treated gently with a low-speed setting, but always keep the device on the muscle, not the vertebrae.
Do not use a massage gun on areas with open wounds, bruises, rashes, varicose veins, or recent surgical sites. If you have a blood clotting disorder or are taking blood thinners, consult your physician before use.
Pregnant individuals should avoid using massage guns on the abdomen, lower back, and legs without medical clearance. Always consult a healthcare provider if you have any underlying conditions.
